Mood Disorders

Embarking on the journey to understanding and navigating mood disorders is an exploration of the human psyche; it takes time, it takes progress, but every small step matters. You may be experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions, constantly fighting internal struggles, feeling confused or having uncertainty of the root cause. I work with you to debunk myths, misconceptions, and stigmas around mood disorders because they do not define you and they are not weaknesses. I believe that change and management are not only possible but attainable through therapy and self-exploration because medication is not always the end-all-be-all. My goal is to support you in discovering your strengths and understanding that your uniqueness is valuable so that you start feeling stable and aware of what your mood is telling you. Together we will build empowering claim over your life, forging a path towards emotional balance and a fulfilling existence.

I understand the isolation and exhaustion that can come from inner battles.

You are not alone, you are strong, you are resilient, & there is hope…

While I may not be able to provide a formal diagnosis and I’m also not a big fan of labelling, I do recognize that language plays a significant role in expressing your narrative and addressing your experiences. I want you to know that I see you, and I will always highlight that you are more than a diagnosis!

Mood disorders are on a spectrum, there is no one-size-fits-all in my opinion. Whether you're navigating challenges related to bipolar disorders, depressive disorders, mixed states, or managing with complex personality patterns, my goal is to be here for you, guiding you, being a confidant with immense compassion and understanding.

A few common misconceptions or myths about mood disorders that I want to debunk right now:

  • Positive thinking can cure mood disorders, so just be positive” - While there is some truth to this, blah it irks me at times because being positive ALL the time is literally impossible and you’re valid in thinking or feeling negative; however, BE self-compassionate. One of my biggests statements to others is “stay kind in your mind”. Often this is interpreted as meaning “stay positive”, however what I truly mean is be compassionate to yourself (fact).

  • "It's just a phase." - Nope - Fact: Mood disorders are serious medical conditions that can persist if not properly treated/managed. They're not temporary phases that individuals can simply snap out of.

  • "It's all in your head." - haha, I mean to a degree, okay maybe - Fact: Mood disorders have biological and genetic components. They involve complex interactions between brain chemistry, genetics, and environmental factors.

  • “ they’re just seeking attention." - yeah, I just called this myth out - Fact: Individuals with mood disorders are often struggling with internal emotional pain, and their behavior is not necessarily about seeking attention, but about finding ways to cope.

  • "Mood disorders are a sign of weakness." - actually the OPPOSITE - Fact: Mood disorders are not a reflection of personal weakness. They're medical conditions that can affect anyone, and are full of strengths and value.

  • "Medication is the only solution." - psychopharmaceuticals are important BUT… Fact: While medication can be an important part of treatment, psychotherapy, lifestyle changes, and support networks are also crucial for managing mood disorders effectively. Combining both therapy and medication is often the most beneficial because a mood stabilizer or SSRI can only take your actions and biological functioning so far.

There are many other myths and stigmas that could be listed and I would love to hear from you about what your experience has been 😊. I know reaching out can be difficult, my hope is that you feel more aware of what mood disorders are like and how challenging, as a society, it is for most people to understand and recognize.
